John R. “Jack” Porath was born in Queens County, Flushing, New York and came to Pacific Beach, San Diego in 1955 at the age of 11 with his family. He attended Pacific Beach’s St. Brigid’s school for the 7th and 8 grades then went to St Augustine High School for the 9-11th grades. For his senior year, Jack went to Mission Bay High School and graduated in 1961. Soon after graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force on 27 Jun 1961 and retired 1 Nov 1982 as a CMSgt serving over 7 years in overseas assignments. Jack earned his eligibility for the VFW by serving at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base from 1 July 1973 to 1 July 1974 where he was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for operations in Laos and Camdodia. Jack earned his BA from St Leo College in 1977 and his MA from Central Michigan University in 1978. He was the Post Commander of Mission Bay Post 11044 for four years. He was named All American Commander and due to consolidation he is now a Past Commander of Post 5985. He is currently Post 5985s Adjutant and Judge Advocate.
