Sam is a native of San Diego who grew up in the neighborhoods of Bay Park and Pacific Beach and is a graduate of Clairemont High School, class of 1966. Soon after graduation from high school, Sam attended Mesa College where he played football as a defensive lineman. After three semesters, and immediately prior to being drafted, he volunteered for the U.S. Army and was sent to Vietnam for 15 months after a short 6 month stint in Ludwigsburg, near Stuttgart, Germany. He earned the Combat Infantryman's Combat Badge in Vietnam. Sam has been a member of the VFW for over 20 years and is the Post Commander for the 2009-2010 year. In 1989, he was the Road Captain and rode to the Vietnam Wall for that year's Rolling Thunder event. In 1990, Sam returned to Vietnam for one month, visiting the areas where he once fought. He and his wife, Margo, reside in Pacific Beach.
